La Scelta // The Choice

Seminario Vescovile Giovanni XXIII, di Bergamo

Oggi sono andato a messa, come (quasi) tutte le domeniche. Per fortuna, avevano un volantino che delineava la messa e le preghiere associate. Ho bisogno del tempo per memorizzare la messa, ma tempo c’è! : ) La cosa che vorrei sottolineare di questa messa è la sua dedizione ai giovani che cercano Cristo e di adottare integralmente il suo stile di vita, particolarmente quelli che entrano in seminari. Un giovane ventiseienne bergamasco ci ha dato l’omelia, in cui ha parlato del suo cammino spirituale verso la vita da prete. Non ricordo tanto di cos’ha detto. Certo, ha spiegato che una gran parte della vita sacerdotale sono i sacrifici. Quando uno decide di fare questa vita, è consapevole che sta per lasciare la normalità. Questa vita è piena di studio, meditazione, e servizio. Questo ragazzo viaggava per tutta l’Italia aiutando a celebrare messe e imparando da diversi preti. Ci ha spiegato che la sua avventura spirituale gli insegnava una lezione di vita importantissima: possiamo ricevere saggezza da chiunque. La vita è veramente un’avventura communale. Ma soprattutto, la cosa che mi è rimasto è che un giovane parlava della sua esperienza e la sua crescita in Cristo. Mi trovai a desiderare che questo sarebbe accaduto anche in America. Spero che ci siano giovani americani come questo noviziato, che hanno la volontà e la convinzione di dire, “Sì, sto seguendo la vita sacerdotale. E questo è il perché.”

Dopo la messa, ho conosciuto un ragazzo che viveva in una comunità per quelli che vogliono ritrovarsi la propria vita (ex tossicopendenti, criminali, quelli che hanno rotto con la famiglia, ecc.). Personalmente, io sostengo questi tipi di progetti con tutto il cuore perché credo che ognuno abbia diritto a seconda possibilità. In verità, mi piacerebbe lavorare in communità come questa: tutti devono conservare la speranza. Prima, però, devo seguire qualche corso di servizi umani!

Today I went to mass like (almost) every Sunday. Fortunately, they had a hand-out that outlined the mass and its associated prayers. I need time to memorize the mass, but there is time. ( : The detail I would like to emphasize about this mass is its dedication to young people who are searching for Christ and how to fully adopt his life style, particularly those who enter the seminaries of Italy and the world. A young 26 year-old Bergamascan gave us the homily, in which he talked about his spiritual walk towards life as a priest. I don’t remember much of what he said. Sure, he explained that a huge part of the priestly life are sacrifices. When one decides to lives this life, he/she is mindful that they are leaving normalcy behind. This life is full of study, meditation, and service. This young man was travelling throughout all of Italy helping celebrate masses and learning from various priests. He explained to us that his spiritual journey was teaching him a very important life lesson: we can receive wisdom from anyone. Life is truly a communal journey. But above all, the thing that stuck with me was that a young person was speaking about his growth in Christ. I found myself wishing that this would also happen in America. I hope there are young Americans like this novitiate, who have the will and conviction to say, “Yes, I am in pursuing the priesthood. And this is why.”   

After the mass, I met a guy who was living in a community for people who want to rediscover themselves and their lives (former addicts, criminals, those who have become estranged from their families, etc.). Personally I wholeheartedly believe in these types of organizations because I believe that everyone deserves a second chance. In truth, I would like to work in a community like this: everyone must preserve hope. First, though, I have to take some human services courses!
