Percorrendo il sentiero della vita...//Just making my way down this trail of life... |
no e si’. Negli ultimi mesi, ho fatto alcune scelte molto sbagliate su cosa
fare qui in Italia.
I miei genitori
fatto apparire come un disperato, immorale, ragazzo punk. Martedi, ho chiamato
Perche’ ci hai messo cosi’ tanto?” Per me,
E dopo il temporale...Mumford & Sons "After the Storm" (li vedo in concerto il 4 luglio!!!)

Apologies for my relative silence on this blog over the past
few weeks. Now the exam period is beginning, and that means one thing: study,
study, study! Now some of you may be wondering why my blog isn’t filled with
stories of travel and European brilliance. To put it frankly, I’m not here to
travel. I’m here to study and to try to improve my Italian. I may do some
traveling after exams are done, but for now…
But my life hasn’t been one huge study hall. Rather, it’s
been quite hectic. Remember that blog post about Peter Pan that I wrote, asking
whether innocence can exist in today’s world? Can we still maintain that child
within us even as we grow into mature adults? I think I’ve finally found that
answer: no and yes. Over the past months, I’ve made a few very misguided
choices about what to do here in Italy. At times, I think I relished my freedom
a little too much. Now some of you might be asking, “Well, Daniele, then was
all that stuff you wrote about ‘finding yourself’ and ‘rediscovering faith’
total crap?” And I have found faith,
but I’ve also had bad experiences too. Italy’s been a total renaissance for me,
but it’s also taught me what paths to avoid in the future. There are two sides
to every coin.
In other words, I’ve learned that we all need to grow up.
There’s no stopping the spotlight of the Real World. My parents have been very
worried about this: they want me to be a good kid, they know I’m a good kid,
but some of the things I posted on Facebook reflect the opposite. Oftentimes,
what I posted on Facebook made me look like a desperate, immoral, punk kid. On
Tuesday, I called my mom about this and she said, “Daniele, enough. This has to
stop. Like it or not, you’re going to have to grow up, and you want to start
thinking about how you “package” yourself to others. Dad and I know you’re a
good kid, but sometimes that’s not what Facebook reflects. In all honesty, you
look like a loser.” That hit me. Hard. Tough love at its finest (which is
ironic, because my dad is usually the one to dish out this kind of
“affection”). And it’s what I needed to hear. I needed to be more mindful of
the choices I made, what I made public and kept private, and how those choices
would affect those closest to me. My dad suggested making a mental list: with
every choice, if the negative outcomes outweigh the positives, don’t do it. Now
some of you might be saying, “Daniele, even a child in elementary school knows
that. What took you so long?” For me, there was a great divide between
listening to advice and actually applying it. It made my parents’ job all the
harder. But now that wall is gone. Promise. I’m truly sorry, Mom and Dad, for
how obstinate and stubborn I’ve been. And to you, readers, my apologies if I
embarrassed you or fell in your eyes.
This is where the New Daniele comes from: he’s not just
someone who has found his inner social capacity and sweet dance moves, although
I have learned that we can have fun and be innocent in this life and still live
it with grace and dignity. He’s also someone who knows how important this life
is and that we can’t throw it away. Every day is a gift: the choices we make,
the relationships we enter into, everything takes on a maximum level of
importance. Learning this lesson has made my faith in God even stronger: I did find a new faith here, that’s not a
lie. But now it’s even stronger because I’ve fallen and I’m committed to
picking myself back up. And with faith, He can help lead me back to where I
want to be: honorable, conscientious, mature, and supremely dedicated to God
and the ones I love. I promise you, readers: from now, the New Daniele is the
one you’ll always see.
And after the storm....Mumford & Sons "After the Storm" (I'm seeing them in Ancona on the Fourth of July!!!!) (:
